MY CAREER GOALS
During my senior year of high school, I thought I wanted to become an occupational therapist. I learned about this career through being treated by an occupational therapist and later job shadowing with the clinic. I was encouraged by the therapist to study kinesiology, and through the pursuit of my degree, my career goals changed. I want a career that will allow me to use my knowledge and help people in their ability to be active. I want to have a chance to have a more holistic approach in my practice, using a combination of personal training and wellness coaching characteristics to address the whole individual. Ideally, I would like to become a cardiac rehabilitation therapist with opportunities to be a coach for a sports team or a group fitness instructor. Being in this career is important to me because I want to be involved in the medical field, and I want to lead others in living a healthy lifestyle. With cardiac rehabilitation therapy, I get to apply the knowledge I have surrounding the heart and help others to explore options and techniques for living a heart-healtheir life.
PERSONAL TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
I approach personal training with a heavy focus on the scientific reasoning behind the goal. I like being able to encourage my clients or those working with me by being able to explain the reasoning behind the movement pattern or the weight or whatever factors they are encountering. While I am focused a little more on the scientific side of things, I like to also take into consideration what the client likes or wants to do. I allow the excitement of something they want to try or something they like doing to be encouraging to them.
MAJOR
Exercise Science
I wanted to major in exercise science to create an excellent foundation for graduate school. Through my coursework, I have fallen in love with understanding the reasons for how the body functions and the concepts of the muscles. In addition to the information about the human body, I have learned other things underneath the umbrella of exercise science, such as nutrition, practices, and sports psychology. There are multiple principles regarding exercise programming, training techniques, psychological factors, and more that I am excited to use in my future career endeavors.
MINOR
Health Psychology
Occupational therapy is rooted in psychology. Having a minor in the subject will help with understanding this portion of the career, and it will help to me to understand more of the psychology of making and following through on goals regarding healthy lifestyles for my other career options.. This is also a subject I have been interested in ever since I took my introduction into psychology course at Purdue University Northwest. It was interesting getting into how people think and understand the world around them. I want to immerse myself in the subject and grasp the information of how the mind works and adapts to the environment.
